What a useful delivery note includes

Source: Good practice

  • Your business name and contact details
  • A delivery note number and the delivery date
  • The customer's order reference, so it can be matched to their purchase order
  • The delivery name and address
  • Each item and its quantity — and no prices
  • A place for the person receiving the goods to sign and date

A delivery note is not an invoice and has no HMRC requirements of its own. The invoice for the same goods does.

A summary to help you decide what to put on a document, not tax or legal advice.

Questions

Should a delivery note show prices?
Usually not. It is read and signed by whoever receives the goods, who does not need to see what the customer pays. The prices belong on the invoice.
What is the difference between a delivery note and a packing slip?
Very little in practice. A packing slip lists what is in one box; a delivery note covers the whole delivery and is signed on receipt.
Is this delivery note template free?
Yes, with no account, and nothing you type is uploaded. The PDF carries a small BroadPaper line at the foot, which BroadPaper Cloud's paid plan removes.
